Sexual Health

What Is Sexual Health?

Sexual health refers to the well-being of sexually active adults, including preventing transmissible infections. It is recommended to have a sexual health check-up annually. UR Health, a certified testing site, offers point-of-care testing for rapid detection and accurate results. Our mission is to make testing accessible and affordable for everyone.

Considering a Check-Up?

What To Expect

At our office, we serve only one client at a time because we prioritize your privacy. The health practitioner or a registered nurse will likely start by asking you about your sexual past, daily habits, and general health. Honesty is very important when completing a history and physical. All we want to do is give you the best care. There is no judgement at UR Health. Your health assessment will include questions like:

  • In recent months, how many intimate partners have you had?
  • What kinds of sexual contact have you had?
  • Have you been diagnosed with an STI in the past?
  • Whether you have had unprotected sex in recent months?
  • If you are experiencing any new or recurring symptoms?

Other preventive services will include a nursing assessment, a simple physical exam, testing, risk reduction counseling, and a prescription sent to your pharmacy of choice. Also at UR Health, clients have the option of selecting between male and female healthcare professionals to ensure a comfortable visit.

Symptoms Suggesting Testing & Treatment

Let a healthcare professional know if you notice changes in your penis, testicles, rectum, or vulva. If you experience symptoms like any of the following, it is possible you've been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection (STI):

  • genital or rectal sores
  • painful urination
  • penile discharge
  • odorous vaginal discharge
  • acute lower abdominal pain

Untreated infections can cause genitourinary complications, so seek medical attention immediately. Early detection and treatment options for HIV and certain STDs are available, including rapid or routine testing.

Please Be Advised:

Do not use the following products in your genital area the day of your appointment: douches, washes, lubricants, vaginal wipes, vaginal moisturizers, antiperspirants, deodorants, or feminine hygiene spray in the genital area. These products could affect the specimen you provide and cause invalid test results!
